60 Seconds with WITS MidAtlantic 2020 Speaker — Monica Flores
Monica Flores is a Technical Project Manager at Lullabot. Her session at WITS MidAtlantic 2020 is a workshop on the Basics of Setting up a Drupal Website.
- Why is speaking at WITS important to you?
Representation matters and I think it’s so important for all of us to share our knowledge and expertise with the community. As women we face additional challenges inside technology, and being together at WITS is a terrific opportunity for us to connect, meet, and identify ways to support each other.
- What inspires you?
I’m always seeking ways to promote my own sense of creativity and rest and reflection. I think when we hold space for “maker” time, we’re more effective because we’re in a state of flow. I’m inspired by a coffee, a journal and pen, a beautiful sunrise, and walks in nature.
- Most useful article you’ve read in the last month
I’m always interested in how to foster more diversity, equity, and inclusion in my work and Ann Lewis, CTO of MoveOn, wrote “How we Hire Tech Folks” https://blog.usejournal.com/how-we-hire-tech-folks-7f36bfec594a which ha solid ideas on how to improve the hiring process.
- When you were a kid what was your dream job?
As a youngster, I wanted to be a doctor and help people; however, when I actually did work as a community health worker in Los Angeles as part of a year of service, I realized that health care professionals work on a daily basis with sick and injured people! I quickly came to the conclusion that I didn’t have the fortitude to be able to cope well in that environment. I’m happy to use similar skills in my current role as technical project manager, taking care of people and product development.
- Tell us something about your session
Pantheon offers an easy way to spin up content management site and build in a sandbox environment for free until you’re ready to launch. We’ll walk through how to install Drupal 8, create a content type, add fields, and build a report, or “view,” of information. Perfect for site builders who want to get more informed on how to roll out projects for their clients and employers.
- Anything else you would like to share?
I’m pleased to connect with other web developers, founders, technologists, product/project managers, and advocates in STEAM, and I look forward to sharing with other conference participants which tech issues you’re currently facing and how you’re dealing with those challenges in a meaningful and productive fashion. I invite you to add your name to the TechWomxn directory of underrepresented folks in technology, using this referral link: http://bit.ly/jointechwomxn
