Nourma Bumgarner is a Freelance Technologist. She is sharing her insights and experience as part of the WITS Virtual Summit panel, Give Back to Get More: Build Your Skills and Network by Volunteering.
Why is speaking at WITS important to you?
It’s important to me because I believe that bringing women together who share a passion for technology is key to supporting each other in a field where women have traditionally been underrepresented.
What or who inspires you?
I am inspired by people who use whatever resources are available to them to solve a problem. I am also inspired by any technical challenge that helps me grow.
Most useful article you’ve read in the last month
An article on JavaScript shorthand tricks was fun to walk through; It was exciting to get a clear understanding of code that I was trying to leverage.
Favorite thing you have learned or did during quarantine
I attended a virtual conference, All Things Open. As an outcome of the conference, I am now involved in contributing to an open source project.
When you were a kid what was your dream job?
I wanted to be a computer programmer. I’m not sure that I really understood what that meant, but it was what I wanted to do.
Tell us something about your session
I am participating on a panel that highlights how volunteering helps in building professions skills, gaining experience, and building a network.
What other sessions or speakers are you most excited to see?
The technology sessions: on robotics, drupal, UX; the sessions are a great mix of current and emerging technologies.
